State Cowboys

Latest Information on the Kansas State & Oklahoma State Matchup by Jack T. Jones
Kansas State’s dream for a perfect regular season came crashing down last week at the hands of Oklahoma. Now, it’s facing a real possibility of not liking the entire state of Oklahoma this season.
Oklahoma State, meanwhile, wants to keep its own dream of a perfect season and a BCS title-game appearance in focus, as it returns home as the nation’s third-ranked team to take on the Wildcats Saturday night in Stillwater.
The Cowboys have won 35 of 57 all-time meetings with Kansas State and own an 18-8 mark in the series at home. OSU has won the last two meetings and three of the last four. The last Kansas State win in Stillwater came in 1999 (44-21).
Kansas State Wildcats
A promising season took a goose-egg in the second half last week against Oklahoma, as the previously unbeaten Wildcat were outgunned 34-0 after halftime in a 58-17 home loss to the Sooners. Next up is another top-10 team, but KSU is 3-0 away from Manhattan this year. The 17 points last week marked just the second time the Wildcats were held to fewer than 24 points in a game.
The low scoring output dropped the Wildcats to 42nd nationally in scoring (31 points per game), while posting 340 yards of offense per game (210 rushing, 130 passing). Collin Klein doubles for KSU as both a running and passing threat–he leads the team with 762 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns (4.3 yards per carry) and completes 58 percent of his passes for 992 yards and eight scores with three interceptions. His offensive line, however, has allowed 21 sacks. When Klein hands off, John Hubert has recorded 708 yards and two TDs (5.3 ypc); when Klein throws, his top targets are Chris Harper, who has 28 receptions, 320 yards and 3 TDs, and Tyler Lockett (15 for 214, 2 TDs).
The Wildcats rank 47th nationally in scoring defense (24 ppg), while allowing 381 yards per game (278 passing, 103 rushing). The unit has 16 sacks, forced 17 turnovers and has two interception returns for TDs this year (Nigel Malone, David Garrett). Garrett has 51 total tackles to complement the team-best 60 of Arthur Brown. Meshak Williams and Jordan Voelker have 10 of the team’s 16 sacks and Malone has six interceptions.
Lockett averages 37 yards per kickoff return and has two returns for scores this year.
Oklahoma State Cowboys
The Cowboys keep chugging along, leading 49-3 after three quarters in their 59-24 home win over Baylor last week. OSU has not allowed 30 points in any of the last five games, and has scored 30 or more in all eight games, 40 or more five times and 50 or more four times. Their signature wins have both been on the road–30-29 at Texas A&M and 38-26 at Texas.
The Cowboys are doing it with their offense, which ranks second nationally in scoring (50 ppg), while posting 555 yards of total offense per contest (373 passing, 182 rushing). Brandon Weeden has completed 71 percent of his passes for 2,710 yards and 22 TDs, with just seven INTs. His offensive line has allowed 10 sacks. Reigning conference player of the year Justin Blackmon is the top target, with 74 catches for 834 yards and 10 TDs. The running game is handled by Joseph Randle, who has 842 yards (6.2 ypc) and 16 TDs, and Jeremy Smith, who has 502 yards and seven scores (7.5 ypc).
With such a high-powered offense, the defense has been in the background, ranking 62nd nationally in scoring (26 ppg), while giving up 456 yards of offense per game (270 passing, 186 rushing). The unit has 22 sacks and has forced 29 turnovers. Daytawion Lowe leads the team with 58 tackles, adding two sacks, an interception and three forced fumbles. Jamie Blatnick has seven sacks to lead the team and Brodrick Brown has four picks (and two fumble recoveries), while Justin Gilbert and James Thomas each have two.
Quinn Sharp averages nearly 48 yards per punt and Gilbert averages nearly 28 yards per kickoff return, with two taken back for TDs.
